Anna’s Courage and Determination That Results in Her Eventual Emancipation Essay Example for Free

Anna’s Courage and Determination That Results in Her Eventual Emancipation Essay English ‘Year of wonders’ Practice essay #1 â€Å"More than anything else, it is Anna’s courage and determination that results in her eventual emancipation’. Do you agree?† The circular structure Novel â€Å" Year of wonders† by Geraldine Brooks, details the events taking place at a small village called ‘Eyam’, through the eyes of the protagonist Anna Frith. Set in the 1600s, the town of Eyam (along with the rest of Europe) finds them self’s at the mercy of the devastating disease know as the bubonic plague. This relentless and unforgiving infection kills within days and spreads rapidly, making it near impossible to combat. In response, Eyam’s unofficial ‘leader‘ and rector, Mr. Mompellion, imposes a ‘voluntary’ quarantine on the village, which isolates them from the rest of the outside world, leaving themselves to deal with the fear and challenges brought by the plague. Throughout the testing times brought by the plague, the bravery and willpower of the main character Anna Frith is constantly evident and is the main reason why she is able to survive the plague and eventually free her self from the past, with her new life in Oran. This is shown in the novel through Anna’s fortitude to over come her great challenges and fears and her constant endeavor to help others. However her loss in faith throughout the novel also plays a role in the development of her new life. Through one of the most testing times of human history, a young and timid girl in Anna Frith responds by stepping up and growing strong. She had to face tasks, no ordinary women would be capable of, such as; laying her husbands body out for burial and dealing with the mangled remains of her father. And not to mention the countless amount of ‘death beads’ she attended. Further more we learn early learn of Anna’s fear of delivering babies and midwifing due to her mother due to a four-day labor. During this labor, a barber surgeon was called in and used a thatcher’s hook to pull the remains from Anna’s mother. With Anna’s father, Josiah, too intoxicated to realise Anna was in the room, she was exposed to seeing â€Å"the tiny town off arm of [her] stillborn sister† and â€Å"the pale, folded flesh, the tiny, perfect fingers open like a little flower†. This fear is over come by  determination when Elinor Mompellion requests Anna’s help to deliver Mary daniel’s baby. Anna was â€Å"not calm, nor certain and had no skill† but was a great help in the successful delivery of the baby and â€Å"in a season of death, we celebrated life†. Anna then realised that due to the dwindling numbers of the village, it was essential that Anna rise’s to the occasion and start burdening some of the load off Elinor’s shoulders. Anna performs very well in the delivery foreshadows that amount of deliveries she partakes in, and the eventual career path she takes with ahmed bey in oran. Further more, when a young orphaned girl is in desperate need of assistance to save her family mine, Anna jumps at the opportunity. She undertakes the dangerous task even though she dreads that it will leave her â€Å"dead in the dark like Sam†. Even In the presence of these fears she puts the needs of other before her own reservations. It is Anna’s Determination to over come her fear and apprehensions for the greater good of someone else that makes her â€Å"tempered and strong† and allows her release the shackles of her past at the end of the novel and start a new life in Oran. At a time when you were considered lucky to not be ravaged by disease, many would avoid contact with those affected, unlike Anna who was at the forefront helping. With the ever-smaller population of Eyam becoming smaller by the day, Anna realised that it was her duty to assist Elinor in give strength to the healthy, and to also bring solace and peace to those afflicted with the plague. She started becoming an established and capable caregiver even though her official role is as a servant. Through out the novel, Anna continued to help others in the town such as Mr. Mompellion in his duties as rector, Merry wick ford with the collection of led from her mine thus saving Merry’s claim, and also the with the adoption of the young Bradford baby, aisha. By adopting the her she becomes more independent and does not endorse the trends of other women during that time period and does not succumb to the prejudices of society. For Anna, surviving the plague was not enough, she states †Å"I was alive, and I was young, and I would go on until I found some reason for it†. With Anna’s willingness to help people during severely hard circumstances aided her in fulfilling her ambition to complete a â€Å"worthy life’s work† as a midwife on Oran. Although Anna’s persistence largely leads to her emancipation, her loss in faith is also attributed to her new life in Oran. Religion during the 1600s played a very significant role in how people thought, behaved and eventually how they tried to explain the cause of the plague. For many, including Anna, the plague was believed to be a punishment from god, sent to rid the earth of sin. When questioned, the town rector Mr. Mompellion could not explain why God had caused such devastation. Anna is seen to start to question her religious beliefs early in the novel when she says, â€Å"Why I wonder was god so much more prodigal with his creation† and â€Å"why should this good women (Maggie Cantwell) lie here, in such extremity, when a man like my father lived to waste his reason in drunkenness†. When Mr. Mompellion can’t explain the plague from a religious stance, many of the villagers look for other scape goats and turn to superstitions such as witch craft, an d hence the killing of Anys and near death of Mem. Anna does not succumb to the superstition and turns to a thought out explanation that â€Å"perhaps the plague was neither god nor the devil, but simply a thing of nature, as the stone on which we stub our toe†. This loss in faith of religious explanation allows her to find a reason to live purposely and let go of all her ties and memories with the rector. For the duration of â€Å"year of wonders†, Anna Frith demonstrates several strong and purpose driven characteristics that allowed for her to survive severely tough times and escape to her new life in oran. Anna was able to over come her fears, put peoples needs before her own and was able to let go of her religious beliefs which allowed her to move on with life and forget all elements of her past.

Benefits of Owning a Dog

Benefits of Owning a Dog Dogs and Human Relationship Dogs are widely referred to as ‘Man’s Best Friend’. Dogs are included as part of human society. Our relationship with the dog is much more varied, intense, and independent than with any other living species. Keeping a dog as a pet is a joy and a privilege, but it is also a responsibility. Although dogs have their basic requirements similar, different breeds, have very different emotional needs, but you can always count on their loyalty, the dog’s superior physical design and senses were obvious to our ancestors and by harnessing these attributes, the dog became – and still remains throughout the world – our best animal friend. That relationship continues to evolve and develop, with dogs more popular now than they have ever been. You can observe a great dog human relationship is when a dog really knows his owner by the way he communicates with him. A dog can be part of a family as the protector. They will always be there and protect you no matter what happens. Dogs also have feelings that can cope with humans. If you feel sad, they can comfort you. They know how to make you happy. Sometimes dogs need attention, that’s why sometimes dogs do things like, nibbling your slippers or gnawing your fingers. But dogs do little things that make us smile. They always bark to greet you at the door; they know when you need them, etc. A dog can be the best pet for you but it is up to you if you prefer cats than dogs. As a dog owner, I have 10 reasons why dogs are called man’s best friend. They dont need to say anything to make you feel better on a really bad day. Dogs literally don’t speak like us, humans. They just bark, whine, and wag their tails. They do this just to put a smile on our face. If you have a bad day, try talking to your dog about your problems even they don’t understand what you’re saying, they will just tilt their head and stare at you but in the end they end up making you happy by doing little things like hugging you, licking you (it means kiss to them) They’ll protect you. Always! Throughout history, one of the main jobs of the domesticated dog has been to protect its owners and guard against unwelcomed people or animals. Epic of Beowulf Essay -- Epic of Beowulf Essays

The epic poem, Beowulf, is one of the oldest European epics in existence. When Beowulf was written, the writer incorporated many of the ideals of the Anglo-Saxons. Some of these ideals included loyalty, bravery, selflessness, and justice and were demonstrated in the hero. Both the characters Beowulf and Grendel represent aspects of both good and evil, Christianity and Paganism, and what occurs when they collide with one another. A characteristic of an epic poem is the concern over struggles that humans face, which is presented in a serious manner. The hero often embodies the religious, national, and cultural values of his homeland and abroad. The premise of the story is quite simple: the Danes were in distress because of the great monster Grendel, so Beowulf, a native of the Geats, sails to engage in battle with Grendel and become victorious in saving the seemingly faithless Danes. Throughout the epic, there are many instances where examples of the thirteen epic conventions are used in the writing of Beowulf and in describing both the ideals of the Anglo-Saxons and the underlying challenges with mortal problems, such as good versus evil.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Beowulf, as an epic, can be demonstrated through examples in the writing of the story. Beowulf is often described as a national hero who embodies the ideals of his race or nation. He is referred to as, â€Å"†¦the strongest of the Geats, greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in the world,† and is shown as displa...

Daily Lives Essay

WW1 had just ended and the soldiers who were fighting were returning home. When the men returned home they found things were much different than when they had left, women were working. Transitioning was very difficult for the men because they were used to the women cleaning and cooking, not getting ready for work. It was very hard for a husband and wife to both get ready for work in the morning but with all the new inventions such as the hairdryer and the electric razor it made getting ready for work much faster and easier. Before the 1920s, women had to blow-dry their hair by inserting a flexible pipe in the exhaust of a vacuum cleaner. In 1920, the first hair dryer was invented. Women were so excited even though the machine was not quit designed well, and got overheated easily, it was still better than using a vacuum cleaner! For the men the first electric razor was a revolutionary invention. As one could shave quickly without using soap, or water, electric razors grew in demand qu ickly. For breakfast they could simply put a piece of bread into the pop up toaster. It was a quick easy meal to eat before work. After a long day at work the family can come home and sit in their recliners and quickly eat a frozen food dinner so they would be on time for their favorite radio station, KDKA on the radio together. After eating breakfast, they would get in their car and drive to work. By late 1920s, the automobile had confidently proven itself as the newest and most popular means of road transportation. The invention of the automobile made it much easier and quicker to drive to work, rather than walking or driving a buggy. Because of the invention of the automobile it made it conceivable to live a further distance from work, making the option of different career choices available, and possibly better jobs. The invention of the car radio was very enjoyable while on their way to work and once again they could listen to KDKA on the radio. The traffic signal was very helpful and after they were invented and put into use there was a decrease in the number of accidents that frequently occurred because of  missed communications between drivers. Working conditions in the early part of the 20th century were dirty, crowded, and dangerous. Factory jobs were booming, and more families were moving to the cities to find opportunities. The reason the factory jobs were going so quickly was because of the need for assembly line workers. People could also work in construction companies and now were able to use the huge shovel called the bull dozer instead of using the shovel manually. This was a big time saver for the construction companies. Also the Radial Arm Saw was invented and was used for cutting long pieces of lumber and could also be used in construction. The men were able to do their work in more than half the time. Plus with both of this invention it helped alleviate people having as much back pain. The jobs of detectives became more efficient because of the invention of the lie detector. The device measured the heartbeats and breathing rate of a person in order to check whether the person was lying. With the invention of the Audiometer it made the results of a hearing test more efficient and made it easier doctors to evaluate hearing loss. In the 1920s when 3-D movies were coming out and the radio had just been invented people were happy as their social life was booming. People were using instant cameras, and loud speakers were being used at sporting events. One of the most exciting inventions for people was when they went to a carnival they could have the thrill of their life by riding the famous Tilt -a – Whirl for the first time. It changed their life in several ways such as making thing faster and easier and more efficient, and way more exciting. Technology has changed a lot since t he 1920’s and continues to change daily. I hope the United States continues to have entrepreneurs who never give up trying to make new technology that can better the world and help those who live in it. http://www.ask.com/question/transportation-in-the-1920s

Ways of Protecting the Environment

Our environment is a gift from God so we must take the full responsibility in protecting and preserving it. Good environment can make people feel happy and fit. To improve the environment means to improve our life. Therefore, human beings can protect the environment in three ways: conserving water, recycling, reducing, reusing and saving energy. First, we can protect the environment through saving water. Water is very important to us because we can’t live it. Water which is suitable to drink is becoming less and less. It is because we always waste a lot of water in our daily life. For example, many of the people always turn on the faucet when brushing teeth, washing or rinsing. Instead, we can fill a container with water for our use. Second, recycling, reducing and reusing are other ways to protect our environment. We can recycle the aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers. Besides that, we can transfer the organic matter such as potato peelings, leftover food and leaves to a compost heap in the garden and used as a natural fertilizer for the plants. Next, we should reduce the usage of plastic bags because they are non-biodegradable and hard to recycle. Let us reuse the things that are still valuable instead of throwing it away. Donate your old clothes or things to those who are in need. Not only will you protect the environment, but you will also contribute to a good cause. Last but definitely not the least is conserving energy. Let us use compact lights in our houses for they conserves electricity and remember to turn it off when you leave a room. When you do not use a house device like TV, radio, laptops, etc. turn it off as well. It's an easy habit to take up which will help you save a lot of money. Be concern and be a part in protecting the Mother Nature.
